T.J. Ford, making a routine cut during a routine practice, suffered an all-too-familiar result last night.
The oft-injured point guard finished practice receiving treatment in the trainers’ room.
The diagnosis this time?
A slight abdominal strain that may – or may not – keep him out of today’s workout in advance of tomorrow’s home game against the Orlando Magic.
“Some years it’s just your number, there’s nothing we can do about it,” said Raptors coach Sam Mitchell, speaking of the injury woes that already have kept Ford out of 30 of the team’s 51 games this season.
“If he can go, he can go. If not, we do what we’ve always done – go to Plans B and C.”
On the positive side of Ford’s health ledger was the fact he was even participating in last night’s practice, which began at the unusual hour of 6 p.m. to allow stragglers time to return from all-star weekend getaways. Also, Ford was reporting good news regarding his sprained right wrist.
“He said his wrist felt better,” said Mitchell. “He had it wrapped but he was practising.”
Well, was practising until the non-descript play in question, during which Mitchell said Ford was simply “dribbling down the court … and turned the wrong way.”
“It was just a regular cut,” said Raptors all-star Chris Bosh. “I think it’s one of those things where he moves so fast, he’s so quick, I guess his body needs time (to get up to speed). He just hasn’t had that time.
“Hopefully, this won’t be a major setback for him.”
